York start for Cadeaux

Melbourne Cup runner-up Red Cadeaux has returned from his winter break in good shape and the Sportingbet Yorkshire Cup on May 18 is a possible starting off point, according to his trainer Ed Dunlop.

Red Cadeaux narrowly missed out on becoming the first-ever British-trained winner of the Melbourne Cup when he was denied by Dunaden in the Flemington feature in November.

He went on to finish third in the Hong Kong Vase the following month before being sent out to the paddocks for the winter.

He has since returned to training and Dunlop has confirmed he could make his seasonal bow in the York Group Two in May.

"Red Cadeaux has wintered very well - he looks a stronger horse. He had a long break after Hong Kong and has just started doing some faster work. We are happy with what we are seeing from him so far. The Yorkshire Cup is a possible starting point," Dunlop confirmed.

Reflecting on his near-miss Down Under, Dunlop added: "Initially, we went through the agony of 'had we won, was it a dead-heat - no, we've got beaten'.

"But we must not forget how very proud we were of what he did - a 30/1 shot who nearly won the Melbourne Cup. Then he finished third in the Hong Kong Vase on ground that was probably too firm for him, but he still ran a great race.

"He started last season finishing second in the Rosebery Handicap and improved phenomenally. We are looking forward to seeing how he gets on this year."
