McGeeney open to Jonnston inclusion

by Michelle Fortune , 26 April 2012

Kieren McGeeney will leave the door open for Seanie Johnston even if his transfer saga does not reach a conclusion before the start of the championship.

Johnston is seeking a transfer to Kildare are losing his place in the Cavan panel, although Val Andrews departure has cleared the way for him to return for the Breffni County.

His attempts to join St Kevin's in Kildare have been thwarted by the Central Competitions Control Committee who have not been convinced by Johnston’s claims that he resides in the county, but the new CCCC, who are due to come into operation next week, could clear the transfer.

While it could be May before the situation is resolved, McGeeney has made it clear he will have no problem including him in his squad despite his lack of games.

"You can't. One fella might have great form for his club during the summer," McGeeney explained in The Sun.

"The Seanie Johnston thing is frustrating because the same rules don't apply on one person.

"Whatever your beliefs or opinion given what has happened, the one thing I will say about Seanie is that he is honest.

"He has that kind of integrity. It is frustrating. I understand there are rules there and other things people feel that they are trying to protect.

"It is frustrating for the young fella, he only wants to play football."
